Some people LOVE them.
Some people break out in hives at the mere thought of a ring inside a cracker.
And some of us (hello Kate T) have had them – well, boxing day, actually, but it still counts!
But if you are thinking of popping the question — or suspect someone might be planning to pop one at YOU — here are some festive ideas that manage to be romantic without tipping into full Cliff-Richard-Misletoe-and-Wine cringe.

🎄 1. The Christmas Lights Stroll
A classic for a reason.
Wander through your local town centre, National Trust garden or twinkly seaside promenade.
Hold hands. Pretend you’re in a budget Hallmark film. Nothing says romance more than mood lighting! And, oh, those back lit photos!
Warning: Don’t propose directly under the giant inflatable Santa. It will haunt the photos. And your dreams.

🎁 2. The Advent Calendar of Clues
This is adorable AND involves stationery, so we’re already on board.
Write 24 tiny notes:
– favourite memories
– reasons you love them
– in-jokes
Then behind Door 25: the question.
Cheaper than a £300 beauty calendar and significantly more thoughtful. (Although if it includes a ‘serum’, we’re always impressed – as it sounds very scientific and must be good for you!)

🪵 3. The Cosy Night In
Tree lights on. Mulled wine warming.
Favourite film queued. Dog bribed to behave.
Then — and this is important — actually say something.
Do not rely on placing a ring casually within their eyeline and hoping for the best.
However, in our experience, mumbling and then crying seems to work just as well as actual words.

🍽️ 4. The Christmas Dinner Surprise
Only attempt this if you are 100% certain no one will swallow the ring during the main course.
Stuffing + diamonds = a Boxing Day you’ll never forget.
Better choice: propose AFTER pudding and BEFORE Uncle Kevin decides to rehash Brexit for the sixth year running.

Front: something lovely.
Inside: “Fancy marrying me?” – ring sticky-taped in there for added diy shonkyness.
It’s sweet, simple, low-key, and you can keep the card forever without it going mouldy like forgotten mistletoe.

Flash mobs are banned. BANNED. No real reason, we’re just a bit over them…
But a local choir singing your partner’s favourite carol as you “accidentally” walk past?
Adorable. Festive. Cockle warming.
Pop the question and let the altos pretend not to look.

Tell them it’s a cute Christmas couple photo.
Choose a pretty spot. Let a photographer lurk nearby.
Drop to one knee. BOOM — best photos of your life.
Excellent if you’re low-key nature lovers who don’t want a big PDA

🔥 8. Christmas Morning, Just You Two
PJs. Coffee. Tree lights.
Ring tucked into a stocking or disguised as the “one last present.”
Top tip – wrap the ring box in a pass-the-parcel style epic of ever increasingly large boxes. Annoying and adorable a the same time.
Zero audience. Maximum mushy feelings.
Ideal for introverts or anyone who cries at the John Lewis advert.

Ice skating at Somerset House, a frosty sunrise on the Downs, a blustery beach walk…
Bonus: if one of you falls over mid-proposal, that’s the kind of story you dine out on for YEARS.

New Year’s Eve is basically national proposal night.
Warm prosecco in hand, fireworks overhead, mild existential dread about resolutions…
Perfection.
And…. if you didn’t do Christmas your other half will be absolutely stoked as they probably thought it was NEVER going to happen!
